Doula by Definition

A Doula:

• Recognizes birth as a profound life experience that the mother will remember and reflect upon throughout her life;
• Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a mother/couple in labour;
• Assists the mother/couple to prepare and implement their desired birth plan;
• Stays by the side of the labouring mother/couple throughout the entire labour;
• Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint and assistance to the mother/couple by providing information they need to make good decisions;
• Facilitates communication between the labouring mother/couple and their clinical care providers; and
• Nurtures and protects the woman’s memory of her birth experience

All packages include:

• 24-hour on-call support from 36 weeks to one month following the birth
• 1 hour of postpartum/breastfeeding support directly following the birth
• Personalized birth plan or ‘wish list’

Description of Services and Possible Add-On Services

• Each pre or postnatal visit is 1 hour in duration - Monday to Friday late afternoon to early evening availability, Saturday and Sunday early morning to early evening availability
• Additional pre or postnatal visits may be added at a cost of $50 per visit
• Packages of postnatal visits are available at a reduced rate depending on the number of visits requested
• The overnight stay is typically 12 hours in duration
• An overnight stay may be added to any package at a cost of $250
• Infant massage instruction is based on four, 45-minute in-home classes over a 4-week period
• Infant massage instruction may be added to any package at a cost of $100
